Second National Conservancy Conference May 2004
Hosted by the KZN Conservancy Association
The second National Conservancy conference was held in May at the Ithala Game Reserve in Northern Natal. This conference, convened by the KZN Conservancies Association, was opened by the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s CEO Khulani Mkhize. All 9 provinces were represented by 118 delegates who attended to hear and discuss topics under the title “ Empowering communities through Conservancies “. There are now more than 800 conservancies in South Africa covering some 4 million hectares and 5 Independent Associations ( namely KZN, Gauteng, W Cape, Limpopo and Mpumalanga )
Mr Mark Botha from the Botanical Society of SA at Kirstenbosch, in his keynote address, said it is necessary for the Conservancy Association leadership to seek the understanding and assistance of government to encourage private sector investment in resource management through creative conservation incentives in order to protect our sensitive habitats and species under pressure.
